Moto phones that might NOT get Android O - here's why

A lot of people care about software updates, and a lot want to get them as soon as Google releases them. Motorola is one of the fastest to release new software updates and has remained like that for four years.
Yesterday, we made a list of the phones that might get Android O. There are, however, a few that most likely won't get the new update:

  • Moto M
  • Moto E3
  • Moto E3 Power
  • Moto G4 Play
  • Moto C*
  • Moto C Plus*
*Moto C phones have not been released yet and we can't speculate about any future update.

Why won't they get updated?

Why? One of the main reasons could be that your device's processor won't be able to handle the new update. Updates weight a lot, and though they do bring new features, they sometimes make your phone slower or overheat.

The Moto M, Moto E3, Moto E3 Power and maybe the Moto C & C Plus might never see Android O. Motorola doesn't want to degrade user performance, and knows that even if users will be angry at the company, the phone without the update will perform better than if the update was released. Other manufacturers update their old phones to new software versions and this ends up ruining the whole user experience and causing serious issues on the phones. Moto doesn't want that to happen.

Why do updates take time?

Here's what you need to know. First of all, updates take time because they have to be perfect for the user who's getting it. They don't want your phone to overheat, or get hacked by a faulty security protocol, or your camera to stop working. It would be a big issue for both the user and the manufacturer if that happened.

In addition, Motorola has to send the update to carriers before it gets approved, even if your phone is a retail unlocked phone. Carriers take a long time to approve it, because they have to do the same with all the other manufacturers and sometimes other manufacturers are a bigger priority.

Last but not least, Motorola is still one of the fastest pushing updates. If you compare Moto with the other manufacturers, you will see the flagship and mid-tier devices from the company get the update within months.
